Author’s notes: Thanks to Kat & Jen for their encouragement with getting this to turn into a fic.
For Vexed…

“You’re very protective of her, kleine Brüder,” Prussia said as they walked into the front parlor. “It’s nice,” he added, pleased that his younger brother was taking an interest in the young maid, Chibitalia.

Holy Roman Empire frowned. “The poor thing was hungry, so I had Fräulein Hungary make her some pasta.”

“Why’d she missed her dinner?” Prussia probed. He chuckled softly at the way his younger brother squirmed. Sitting down on one for matching silk brocade sofas, he put his feet up on the tea table that sat between them.

“Because Herr Austria was being an Arschloch again. He lets Fräulein Hungary get away with things that he yells at Fräulein Chibitalia about. It’s not fair, and I won’t have it in my house.” Holy Roman Empire sat on the sofa across from his brother.

“I see,” Prussia smirked.

Before Holy Roman Empire could come up with a heated rebuttal, Chibitalia entered the room, carrying a large silver tray with a silver tea service on it. She was followed by Austria and Hungary, who carried a smaller tray with an assortment of teacakes on it. Holy Roman Empire’s frown deepened, like his older brother he was not all that fond of Austria, except for the rare moment like this.

“Prussia, get your feet off the table,” Austria said. He was tired of telling his young charge’s older brother about keeping his feet off the furniture and he wished for once the idiot would listen.

Holy Roman Empire looked at his brother, the faintest hint of a smirk tugging the corners of his mouth upwards. He loved it when Austria directed his anger at Prussia, as his brother could more than take care of himself, because it meant that it meant Austria was leaving Chibitalia alone.

Prussia snorted. “It’s my brother’s table and he doesn’t mind. Do you, kleine Brüder?”

“Well…” Holy Roman Empire hedged when the two older countries looked at him for an answer. Looking away from them, he focused his attention on Chibitalia. He could see the poor thing was struggling to hold the heavy tea service and he sighed. Normally, if they were alone, he would have jumped to her aid, but under the two older countries’ scrutiny, he had no choice, but to remain seated. However, there was one thing he could do for her. “Prussia, just listen to Herr Austria and get you feet off the table.” He glared at his brother for good measure, since the fool was chuckling softly to himself as he complied.

Chibitalia gave Holy Roman Empire a shy little smile as she set the heavy tray down. Her dear friend’s expression softened when she caught his eye. Chibitalia sighed softly. She thought Holy Roman Empire was cute, so when it came time to pour him a cup of tea, her hand shook and she spilled the tea. She cringed, expecting a cuff to the head from Austria for being so clumsy, but it never came. Instead, to her astonishment, she heard her friend say, “Don’t you dare!” followed by Prussia’s laughter. Looking up, she put her hand over her mouth to quell her giggles. Like one of the knights in the storybooks Holy Roman Empire was fond of reading, he had come to her rescue and she loved him all the more for it.

Regaining her composure, while her beloved friend and master glared at each other, Chibitalia managed to pour the tea this time without spilling any. As she handed Holy Roma Empire his cup of tea, she said softly, “Grazie.”

“Prego,” he replied back in Italian. He glanced at Austria who was now glaring at something his brother said and back at the object of his affections. “I promise to do what I can to protect you from his abuse, okay?” he continued softly in Italian.

Chibitalia nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. “Grazie mille! You’re too kind, Signore!”

Holy Roman Empire groaned. “Please don’t cry!”

“I won’t…” She sniffed back her tears.

“Be strong, Fräulein.” He sipped his tea.

“It’s hard, Signore…” She hiccupped softly. “But I’ll try.”

“Good.” Holy Roman Empire smiled at her. “And don’t worry; I’ll still protect you no matter what.” He felt his cheeks heating up as she gazed at him lovingly. He sipped his tea again to hide his discomfiture.

With a wave of his hand, Holy Roman Empire dismissed her. He sat back, enjoying his tea, while listening to his brother’s conversation with Austria. He stifled a yawn, it was the same old borings stuff, he liked to ramble on about, and if Holy Roman Empire had heard it once, he had heard it a thousand times or more. Even Austria seemed bored with his brother’s nonsense, dismissing the maids for want of something better to do.

Prussia noted the look of disappointment his younger brother wore when Chibitalia left. A smirk tugged at the corners of his mouth when everything suddenly began to fall into place. His baby brother loved Chibitalia as much as she loved him. “Austria, if I were you, I’d make sure Fräulein Chibitalia stayed in her own room at night from now on.”

Austria not knowing what he was up to, frowned and Holy Roman Empire, who did know, wore a matching one.

“Who knows what nefarious purposes she goes there for at night, but if my kleine Brüder is anything like me…” Prussia winked.

“Excuse me!” Holy Roman Empire’s cheeks heated up. “All she does is sleep there!”

“Exactly! I can’t believe you’ve become a man and I missed it…” Prussia heaved a dramatic sigh.

“Really? Austria, falling for it, stared at his young charge.

Holy Roman Empire sputtered helplessly. “I will not have you say such thing about her, Brüder! She’s still pure!”

“Although, I’m sure it’s not from lack of trying, eh?” Prussia asked.

Holy Roman Empire swore at him in a mix of German and Italian.

Prussia laughed. He was having too much fun with this to stop, even though he felt bad about upsetting his brother. Turning to Austria, who was beginning to catch on, he said, “It seems my poor brother was only restraining himself from ravishing the fair maiden as he didn’t want to wake you up at night.”

“Really? I’m a heavy sleeper so I doubt, I’d be disturbed,” Austria replied. He made the mistake of looking over at Prussia, because the two of them started laughing.

By now, Holy Roman Empire was so angry, he wanted to punch the smirk off his brother’s face and give Austria a good thrashing with Herr Stick. He got to his feet and glared at them, before stalking away to his room, the sound of their laughter ringing in his ears. He did not care if they made disparaging remarks about himself, but he drew the line at involving a lady. Despite being a maid, Chibitalia was after all, the granddaughter of the late Roman Empire and he felt she should be treated as the lady she was. If that meant protecting her honor in addition to protecting her wellbeing, then he was more than will to do so.
