Summary: Today’s the anniversary of the day they met, Italy thinks Germany’s forgotten…
Author’s Note: Thanks to my beta, Jen, for looking this over.

“Ve… Germany,” Italy said. “Do you know what today is?” He shifted the bag of tomatoes to his other hand as they walked back from the store to his friend’s house.

Germany held his chin as he thought it over, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “My brother’s birthday?” he teased.

“No… Wait…” Italy frowned. “Wasn’t Prussia’s birthday last week?” He blinked at his friend, totally confused.

Germany sighed softly as he resisted the urge to cover his face with his hand and slowly drag it down. “You’re right. That was a good party, wasn’t it?”

Italy laughed. “Yeah!”

“Can I guess again?”

“Hmmm…” Germany pretended to put more thought into it. “The dogs don’t have to go to the groomer’s until next week…”

“Ve… Do you need a hint?”

“Not yet.”

“So let’s see,” Germany began, “We just had a World 8 meeting and the next one isn’t until next month. I see your brother’s hosting that one.”

Italy nodded as he shifted the bag of tomatoes to his other hand. “Yup! I’m so proud of him!” he enthused. “He said Spain is going to help with the details and all,” Italy said, his enthusiasm waning a bit.

“He’ll do just fine, Italy.”

“I hope so.”

“I know so,’ Germany affirmed and changing the subject, he added, “Can I have another guess?”

“Okay… Is it the anniversary,” he paused as his little buddy’s face lit up, “of the day Spain introduced you and your brother to tomatoes?” Germany reached for the shopping bag Italy had and took it from him.

“No…” Italy frowned. “Ve… Germany, are you sure you don’t want a hint?”

“Perhaps I do need one…. Okay, what’s my hint?’

“Well, you were close before with tomato.”

“Yeah?” Germany feigned innocence.

“Yup! So your hint is ‘tomato.’”

“Okay…And I was about to say I thought today was the anniversary of our first- Careful, Italy!” Germany said when his friend nearly tripped as he watched a pretty girl walk past them, getting stares from passersby when he called his friend by his “country name.”

“I’m okay.” Italy beamed at his friend.

Germany felt another urge to run his hand over his face. “I was going to say I thought new were celebrating the first time we had gelato together, but you said ‘tomato.’”

“Oh… Ve… Germany?”

“Can we get some gelato?”

This time Germany nearly did run his hand down his face, until he remembered the bags of groceries he was carrying. “No, not now. Besides, I thought we needed to get back quickly so that you could make some tagliatelle and Bolognaise sauce.”

“That’s right!” Italy smiled.

Germany heaved a long suffering sigh as they turned down the block where his house was. They walked along in companionable silence for a few steps, before Italy broke it.

“Ve… Germany?”

“You never guessed what today is.”

Germany frowned. “That’s right, but I don’t need to guess.”

They walked up the path leading to Germany’s house.

“No…” Germany said. “Here, hold this,” he handed Italy the shopping bag full of tomatoes, “I need to get my keys out,” he said as they stopped in front of the door. He unlocked the door and opened it. They were greeted by the dogs.

“Then what day is it?” Italy said as he locked up behind them. He followed Germany and the dogs to the kitchen.

“It’s the anniversary of the day I met the ‘tomato fairy’ and got a dear friend in the process,” Germany said as he set the bags down on the kitchen table, his face contorting in what passed for a smile.

“Yay! You didn’t forget!” Italy cried as he wrapped his arms around his friend in a hug.

Germany shyly enveloped his friend in his arms. “Yeah…” For how could I forget someone as wonderful as you…?
