Author’s Note: Thanks to my beta, Jen, for looking this over.

“Italy and I have an understanding, Brüder,” Germany said as he cut as slice of cake and handed it to Prussia. He cut another one for himself.

“Oh really?” Prussia reached for his cup of coffee and drank.

“Yeah… We’re just friends.” Germany ate a bite of cake, washing it down with a mouthful of coffee.

“Friends with benefits?” Prussia leered.

His brother rolled his eyes at him. “No, Brüder, just friends,” Germany clarified.

Prussia stabbed a piece of cake with his fork. “You’re going to lose him, if you’re not careful.” He ate it.

Germany frowned as he thought things over. “But…”

“I’m serious, Brüder.” Prussia picked up his coffee cup and drank. “Itachen is cute, and France has his eye on him.”

“France has his eye on everyone as well as his hands.” Germany snorted. He ate another bite of cake.

“That’s true… But don’t be like Spain and suddenly wake up one day and realize he’s the love of your life when it’s nearly too late,” his brother gently chided. “You don’t want to end up alone like me, West.”

Germany scoffed over his coffee.

“Sorry, but you don’t count, Brüder.” Prussia grinned over the top of his coffee cup. He drank and refilled his cup from the thermal carafe on the table. “More?”

Prussia refilled his brother’s cup. “I’m being serious, West, you’ve got something wonderful with Itachen. Just,” he started to say as he struggled to put it in words, “just don’t fuck it up.” He held up a hand, forestalling his brother’s comments. “You love him, he loves you; I fail to see what the problem is about committing to something more.”

Germany started to rebut his statement, but took a deep breath instead. As much as he hated to admit it, his brother did have a point. “I don’t know…”

“Well, if you don’t know, how am I supposed to know?”

Germany nodded.

“Just go for it, West! You might just be pleasantly surprised at the results.” Prussia grinned.

“Seriously, Brüder, turning that ‘understanding’ into something more will make you a lot happier in the long run.”

“I know, but…”

“Don’t tell me you’re afraid of commitment?”

“Then call him up and ask him out on a date,” Prussia advised with a smirk. “And yes, going out for gelato counts as a date,” he added, noting his brother’s sigh of relief with a snort of amusement. “It’s just a date, West, something you do all the time without knowing it.”

“Okay. I’ll call him.”

“Good, now what are you waiting for?”

“Go call him now, West, I’ll take care of things here.” Prussia finished his second cup of coffee and got up to put the cup and his plate in the sink.

Germany nodded. He also got up from the table and taking his coffee with him, he walked to the den and sat down at his desk. Germany stared at the phone for several minutes, trying to work up his courage to call his little buddy, when the phone rang. He jumped, not expecting it and when it continued to ring, he answered it before the answering machine could pick up. “H-hello?’

“Ve… Germany? You okay?”

“Yeah… I was thinking, when the phone rang.”

“Oh… Are you working? If I’m bothering you, I’ll go.”

“No, Italy, you’re not bothering me,” Germany replied. “I was just thinking about you when the phone rang…”

“Yeah… Italy?”

“Do you want to go out for gelato? Maybe this weekend?”

“I’d love too! Ve… I’ll come for the weekend and we can do some training and then go for gelato!”

“Sounds like a plan.” Germany, feeling relived, smiled as he hung up the phone. He had a date with his little buddy this weekend. Then the panic set in when he realized he had a date. Germany ran his hand down his face and sighed. Life was a lot simpler when he and Italy had an understanding…
