Author’s note 2: Written for DA’s Bengali Prince Soma comm’s Spring/Easter contest.

Soma looked out the window at the townhouse’s back garden. He had spotted a rabbit living there a few days ago and as Easter approached he wondered if it had laid any eggs in the grass like Ciel and Miss Elizabeth had told him about. He hurried towards the kitchen, where Agni was hard at work, cutting up a chicken for their dinner.

“Agni, I’m going to see if that rabbit in the garden left us any treats,” Soma said as he breezed past his beloved khansama.

“Yes, my prince,” Agni replied, a bemused expression on his face. “Soma, if you can wait a few minutes, I’ll join you.” He added the last pieces of chicken to the bowl.

“Okay.” Soma paused. “Agni… Do you think it laid any colorful eggs?”

Agni thought it over as he clean up his work place. “I honestly don’t know, my prince.” He smiled as he moved over to the sink to wash his hands. Drying them on the towel, he added, “It won’t hurt to look, but try not to be disappointed if there aren’t any.” Agni made a mental note to place a few of the colorful eggs; he had dyed, outside for the prince to find on Sunday.

“Okay… What if I wear those rabbit ears Miss Elizabeth gave us last year? Maybe the rabbit won’t be so afraid of us then and then she’ll lay eggs!” Soma smiled.

“Perhaps…” Agni said, although, he was not so certain that would help as the hares back home in India were generally frightened of anything other than another hare.

“Then wait here, Agni! I shall go upstairs and get them!” Soma dashed out of the kitchen. He returned a few minutes later, carrying two sets of rabbit ears. He handed one to Agni and the two of them placed them on their heads. “Let’s go, Agni!”

They left the kitchen and walked outside into the back garden. It was a warm spring afternoon, although the shadows were starting to lengthen as the sun began to set. Soma hurried over to where he had seen the rabbit, which was long gone. As he got closer to that spot, he noticed the grass had been shaped into a shallow depression. “Agni!” he called out excitedly. “The rabbit made a nest!! I bet there’s eggs!” Soma squatted down and peered at the nest, his eyes wide in surprise. “Agni…” he said softly.

Agni was there in what felt like a heartbeat. While he knew the story about rabbits laying eggs at Easter was nothing more than a fairy story, thanks to Sebastian and the other servants enlightening him, he wondered if Soma had stumbled upon a chicken’s nest. Hunkering down next to his beloved he looked into the nest. “Oh my…” he said softly as he exchanged glances with Soma.

“I don’t think they’re made of chocolate, but the rabbit did bring us some bunnies, hunh?” Soma said, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

Agni chuckled. “Yes, my prince.”

Soma started to reach out to touch the baby bunnies, but stopped. “Maybe we should go and let them sleep.” He looked up at Agni.

“I think is a good idea, my prince. I bet she’ll show her appreciation for not bothering her babies by leaving you a lot of treats in your basket.”

“I hope so!” Soma smiled. “And I promise to share my goodies with you, Agni!”

“Thank you, my prince,” Agni said, smiling gently at his prince.

Soma gazed lovingly at the nest of baby bunnies “Sleep well, little ones,” he said softly. He bounced to his feet and turned, the rabbit ears on his head bouncing around comically. “Come, Agni! I need to write to Ciel and tell him about our Easter bunnies!” He turned and headed back to the house, his beloved khansama in tow.
