Author’s note: Thanks go out to my beta, Kat, for looking this over and helping me with a title.

Prussia lay in the cold empty bed, tossing and turning, while sleep eluded him. Frederick had been married earlier that day and now that he was an adult with a wife, he no longer needed him. They were still friends, but Prussia worried that Frederick would forget him while he set up his own court. Prussia, unfortunately, could not change courts, as it were, as he had to serve Frederick’s father, the king. So he lay in the dark, wishing the Crown Prince was there beside him.

While Frederick had dropped hints about his preferences and Prussia made no secret about his own, they still maintained a simple friendship. Now he regretted more than ever the fact that that was all they had between them. He rolled over onto his side and stared off into the darkness. Sighing, Prussia pushed himself up and got out bed. The floor felt cool beneath his feet as he walked over to the window. He peered through the glass at the night sky.

As much as he did not want to think about it, Prussia’s thoughts kept returning to Frederick. Elizabeth Christine was a lovely girl and she would make a fine wife for the Crown Prince and Prussia could just imagine them in bed together. A pang of jealousy made his stomach hurt and he sighed softly. He pushed those thoughts quickly away as he really and truly wanted to be happy for Frederick. As he made his way back to bed, Prussia wondered when he would be able to see Frederick again. “I miss you so much, Fritz, and you haven’t even been gone a day.”

Across the miles in Schloss Rheinsberg, Frederick found himself unable to sleep. His new bride, Elizabeth Christine, however, slept soundly in their marriage bed. He did not think it was possible to miss his friend so much, but he did. He also could not help resenting Elizabeth simply because she was his father’s choice. Looking over at his wife, Frederick doubted he could ever be friends with her, or worse, ever want to.

Sighing softly, he padded over to the window. Moving the curtain aside, he looked out, not caring to cover his nakedness. He was only a two day or so ride away from Berlin and his father’s court, but he felt as though he may as well be on the moon. Still, it was good to have a measure of freedom, but when he looked at his wife he wondered if that freedom came at too high a price.

“I hope you won’t forget me, Gilbert…” he said softly. “I know I’ll never forget you. And please don’t get mad, but I’m planning on finding a room of her own for my wife. I just can’t… it’s not that, as we both had a great time in Poland, and she’s a lovely girl, but she’s not you, Gilbert. I hope you don’t think it’s too… forward, or scandalous, but I think I’m going to write to you in the morning and invite you over here. It really is a lovely little castle and I’m dying to show it off to you.”

Letting the curtain fall back into place, Frederick yawned. “Bonne nuit, Gilbert…” He turned and walked over to the bed he shared with his wife. Fredrick got back into bed, pulling the blankets over him. He snuggled up to his Elizabeth, wishing she was Gilbert as he drifted off to sleep.

Back in Berlin, Prussia held onto to his pillow. “Fritz, I hope you don’t mind if I write to you in a few days and ask when I can come to visit, cuz I’m dying to see you again.” He sighed softly and then suddenly everything felt better. He still missed his friend, but the thought of going to visit Frederick, left Prussia with a feeling of anticipation that made their abrupt separation more bearable. Making a mental note to write to him in the morning, Prussia found it easier now to fall asleep.
