“What are you, my mother?” Gilbert croaked, as he glared at his brother. “It’s just a cold.”

Ludwig frowned. “I wish Mutti was here to drag your arse to the doctor’s.” He felt his brother’s forehead. “You’re burning up, Gil.”

“I have to go to work, Lutz.” Gilbert drank his coffee. It hurt going down and as much as he hated to admit it, his brother had a point.

“Why can’t they get a substitute? Daisy got one to cover her classes when she was sick.”

“They can, it’s just…” he trailed off, unsure of how to explain things to his brother. He had a lunch date with Lizzie Héderváry and he was planning to ask her to marry him. “I have to review for their midterm. It’s next week and I have a bunch of anxious fifteen year olds fretting over it.”

“So give Daisy your class planner and she can drop it off in the principal’s office for the sub when she signs in,” Ludwig said.

“I need to go into work, Lutz. What if I go in and come home?”

“No, you’re sick and probably delirious if you think I’m buying that, Gil.”

“Buying what, Honey?” Ludwig’s wife, Daisy, breezed into the kitchen. She headed over to the coffee pot and poured herself a cup.

“My idiot brother’s sick and is insisting he has to go into work today.” Ludwig drank his coffee.

Daisy also put her hand on Gilbert’s forehead. “You’re rather warm, Gil. I’ll go in early and talk to Liz, if you want. Unless she doesn’t know you live here...”

“She does…” Gilbert croaked. “Lutz, your wife’s been playing cupid at work and she fixed me up with Lizzie Héderváry.”

“You know, Honey, that new health teacher I was telling you about.”

“Oh.” Ludwig frowned.

Gilbert nodded. He took another painful sip of coffee. “I’m gonna propose.”

Ludwig looked surprised. “But you’ve only known her for what? Six months and as far as I know, never gone out with her.”

“We go on lunch dates, and those weekends with the guys, Lutz? That was just me and her at her place.”

“I see.”

Gilbert set his coffee down. He was tired and suddenly felt like crawling back into bed. Getting up, he went over to the phone and called in sick. After hanging up, he called the florist and ordered a dozen roses for Lizzie. “The note should say, ‘Hey Lizzie, let’s dance under the stars sometime, love Gil’.” He hung up, after giving his credit card information. “I’m going back to bed.”

“She’ll love the flowers, Gil.”

“Hope so…” He trudged off to bed.

“He’s getting married?” Ludwig said.

“Yeah, it’s really great how they hit it off. Lizzie’s a nice girl, Honey, and they’re good for each other,” Daisy said as she held him close.

“Yup! We’d better hurry and get to work, before we’re late.”

Ludwig sighed. “So when do I get to meet this Lizzie-person?”

“Yup. Let’s go!”
