Author’s note: Thanks go out to my beta, Jen, for looking this over and helping me with the title.

I wonder if anyone replied to my awesome profile… Gilbert thought as he checked his email. Awesomeness!! Finding the email he wanted, Gilbert opened it. He was a bit disappointed only one girl out of hundreds, whose profiles he had breezed through, apparently felt worthy of being in his awesome presence. Then again, his sister Julchen had warned him about the site. She claimed to have been a member of the dating site for six months without so much as a nibble. Just as he was feeling that maybe the site was full of losers, he read the girl’s email.

Hey, AwesomeDude69!

I read your profile and saw you’re just as awesome as I am! I thought maybe you’d like to go out on the most awesome date of your life! Reply back and maybe we can get together!

Gilbert could not believe his luck. Here he was on the site for less than a day, and already some chick was looking to date him. He quickly emailed her back, and after twenty minutes of back and forth emailing, he set up a date at a nearby coffee shop. While he thought it was odd that his date also had a head full of platinum blond hair, Gilbert dismissed any misgivings he had. She seemed to feel it would it easier to find each other.

“What are you so happy about?” Gilbert’s twin sister, Julia, asked.

“I’ve got a date tomorrow.”

“Really? Me too! I’m meeting this guy at the coffee shop tomorrow.”

Gilbert laughed. “You’re never going to believe this, but I’ve got a date there tomorrow too.”

Julia giggled. “Maybe I’ll see you there.”

“Yeah.” He grinned.

“I just thought of something,” Julia said, “wouldn’t it be funny, if it turned out we’re dating each other?”

Gilbert laughed. “Very funny! But with all the girls on that site, what are the odds?”

“Wait… What site?”

“That one you were telling me about. I joined the other day.”

“And you’ve got a date already? Wow!”

“Yeah, the other guys on the site must be such losers,” Gilbert said, keeping the fact that he only had one reply to profile to himself. He figured it was better to let his sister think he was so awesome; he could get a date a day after joining a dating site. “Look at how fast I got offers to go out on a date after only being there a day.”

“Yeah!” Julia could not shake the nagging little feeling that AwesomeDude69 was her idiot brother. Still, she could not bring herself to ask if he was. Julia just wanted to enjoy her date tomorrow and if her brother and his date were there, fine, she would deal with it. But until then, she had a date and needed to figure out what she was going to wear. “So I uummm…”

“Yeah, me too,” Gilbert said. He wanted this date to go well, and he hoped his sister’s did too. Especially since they were both going to be in the same place, with spate dates. The last thing eh wanted to do was try and console his sister, while on a date, if hers did not work out.

The rest of day passed quickly and before either one knew it; it was time to get ready for their dates. So while Julia was upstairs hogging the main bathroom in their townhouse apartment, Gilbert was downstairs in the guest bedroom, using the bathroom that was just off it. He primped and preened in front of the mirror in much the same way his sister was. Even though his date kept insisting she was blonde, Gilbert secretly hoped it was his friend Lizzie he was meeting at the coffee shop. As far as he was concerned, she was the most awesome girl around and perfect for him.

Upstairs in her room, Julia was anxiously looking through her closet for something to wear. She wanted to make a good impression on this AwesomeDude69 as he sounded like the ideal guy for her. After trying on her whole wardrobe, Julia settled on her skinny black jeans, a black t-shirt and her black lace-up boots. She got dressed and was tying her one boot, when her brother knocked on her bedroom door. “What do you want, Gil?”

“I just wanted to say have an awesome date, Julchen. Also, I think we should go separately, so our dates don’t think we’re a couple or something,” Gilbert said through the closed door.

“Sure, okay… ummm, thanks, Gil. You have an awesome time too. May we can compare date notes over dinner.”

“Okay. Later, Julchen.”

“Later, Dude.”

Julia heard his retreating footsteps fade into nothing. She finished tying her boots, checked her makeup and counted to ten. As much as she wanted to get to the coffee shop to meet her ideal date, she did not want to walk in with her brother as he had a point. Satisfied he would make it there before her, Julchen left their apartment. She arrived at the coffee shop five minutes late and was glad to see there was no one in there, aside from her brother and the regulars who always seemed to be there, rain or shine.

Gilbert noticed his sister entering. For a minute there, he thought it was his date and was very disappointed when it turned out to be her. He nursed his coffee, groaning softly when Julia sat down at the table next to his. He was about to comment on it, when he realized that was the only free table. He checked his watch. “Looks like our dates are late.”

Julia shook her head as she laughed. “It seems like it.”

“That’s so unawesome!” they chorused.

“Yeah…” Gilbert said.

Julia nodded.

As the minutes ticked by, they sat and waited for their respective dates. Julia noticed her brother checked his watch as often as she checked hers. “You don’t think we got stood up, do you?” she said softly.

“Nah… Maybe they just got held up or something.”

“Yeah… but don’t you think it’s odd, that they both did?”

Gilbert shrugged. “A lil, but stranger things have happened.”

“Yeah, like that dating site paired up together.”

They laughed.

“Uh, Gil, just out of curiosity…”

“What?” He drank his coffee.

“I don’t know…” Julia frowned. “Ummm…”

“Spill it, Julchen.”

“What’s your profile name on that site?”

Gilbert stared at her. “AwesomeDude69,” he said when it hit him. “Please don’t tell me, you’re-”

“AwesomeLady” they chorused.

“Damn it!”

“I don’t know, I think it’s kinda funny, Gil.”

“I don’t! You’re my sister!”

“But the site doesn’t know that. It matched us up on the basis of what we like and dislike. We do like a lot of the same things.”

“Of course we do, we’re twins, so why wouldn’t we?” He frowned.

“We must have matched up a lot closer than we think. Your screen name had three hearts next to it. I’ve never had more than a heart with anyone else.”

“Yeah, but you’re my sister.”

“True, but now I’m also your date.” Julia got up and sat next to him.

“Don’t remind me.” Gilbert finished his coffee.

“So let’s just make the best of it and go on with our date.”

“Yeah… So what did you have planned?”

“Well, I figured we’d sit here and get to know one another, but I already know you.” He smirked.

“Then this should be an awesome first date.” Julia smiled. “You don’t have to impress me.”

“I don’t, but how awesome would I be if I didn’t?” Gilbert’s smirk broadened into a grin.

Julia laughed. “Not very!” She drank her coffee.

“You wanna go for a walk in the park? Or to the record store? It’s Saturday and they always put out the new vinyl then.”

“Yeah? I always thought that was on Wednesday.”

“No wonder I miss all the good stuff!”

Yeah!” he laughed. “Drink up so we can go!”

“Okay, okay!” Julia finished her coffee.

The two of them got up to go, tossing the empty coffee cups in the trash on their way out. They walked through the park, each pointing out a place where they used to play together along with a memory. Julia paused in front of an old cannon.

“Remember when were little and used to climb all over that?”

“Yeah,” Gilbert said. “I remember when you fell off it and broke your arm.”

She laughed. “I think you cried more than I did when that happened.”

“I probably did.”

Gilbert nodded. “I felt guilty cuz you got hurt. If I hadn’t pushed you…”

“True, but no one told me to climb up there.”

“You had to steal our flag, remember?”

“Oh yeah…”

“And now no one can climb on it.” Gilbert sighed. The area around the cannon was now “roped” off with a chain. It would not have stopped him or his sister when they were kids, nor their friends, but nowadays, the kids stayed off it. Granted there was nice playground for them to play on, instead of the old cannon and the surrounding trees. Then again, there were very few kids out playing in the park, and those that were, played under the watchful eye of an adult.

Julia shrugged. “Let’s go.”

They started walking again towards the end of the park. Julia, feeling a bit mischievous, held her brother’s hand. Gilbert looked at her like she had three heads.

“Aren’t you a little too big to be holding my hand?” He smirked. At five foot two inches, his twin stood a head shorter than he did, not that he was all that tall himself. Still, he never tired of teasing her about it.

“Not if I’m going out on a date with you.” She smirked and he laughed.

“Fair enough.”

Hand in hand, they made their way out of the park and to the record store. It was a holdover from days gone by, when everything was on vinyl, cassette, or 8-track. A small mom and pop store, it was filled with bins upon bins of old vinyl records. It smelled old too, but that was why the twins loved it.

They entered the store, Julia refusing to let go of her brother’s hand. So he pulled her along to the back of the store where the new stuff was. She finally let go of him so she could search through the bins too. Since they had similar tastes in music, whatever Julia found, Gilbert would like too and vice versa. After several minutes of browsing and finding some gold amongst the rubbish, the twins brought their purchases up to check out so that they could pay for them.

“I can’t believe this store has so much new vinyl!” Julia said, while they waited to be rung up.

Gilbert nodded. “I told you they get new stuff in on Friday and put them out on a Saturday. And it’s the good stuff too.” He grinned. “You know all those albums I have with the plain white sleeves?”

“Those are all from the days when radio cued up actual records to play on the air. When they started getting crackles and pops, they used to ditch them and places like this would scarf them up.”

Julia looked at her brother like he had three heads.

“I took ‘radio’ in high school and was a DJ in college, remember?”

“Oh yeah…” She smirked at him. “Silly me, I was too busy majoring in boys to notice.”

He snorted. “That’s what jazz band was for.”

Julia giggled. “So that explains why you never had a girlfriend in high school, you were too busy majoring in boys too!” she teased.

He blushed. “That’s not what I meant.”

“I know, but that’s what it sounded like,” she said as she put the album, she had found, on the counter.

Gilbert did the same and when the cashier told him how much, he paid for the albums. Julia took the bag with their purchases and together they left the store. “Want to go home and play them?” he asked. A music buff, he had their father’s old stereo set up in their apartment along with another one, he bought off of eBay, in his bedroom.

“Okay, but I want you to know, I don’t usually go back to a guy’s apartment on the first date.”

“Julchen, in case you’ve forgotten, you live there too.”

She laughed. “I know, and I’ll have you know, I broke my rule about dating my roommates, just to go out with an awesome guy like you.”

“You’re pretty awesome, yourself.” Gilbert put an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close, in a one armed hug as they headed for home.

Julia leaned into it. She was having a good time, while silently lamenting the fact that her ideal date turned out to be a morning spent, goofing around with her brother. Why does life have to be so unfair…? She sighed.

“You okay?”

“Yeah… I was just thinking about why’d you have to turn out to be such a good date? You’re my brother for Pete’s sake!’

“I know, I was kinda thinking the same thing. You think our standards are too high, Julchen?’

They walked up the path leading to their townhouse apartment.

“Nah… we’re just too awesome for the rest of the mere mortals.”

Gilbert laughed.

She smiled ruefully. “Seriously, maybe they aren’t. Maybe I should give Daniel a chance and you should give Lili a chance too, or Lizzie.”

Gilbert shrugged as he opened the door to their apartment. “We could,” he said as they entered. He closed the door behind them and locked it. Gilbert sighed softly. He may not have found a girlfriend, but he did have fun spending the day with his sister. Judging by look she gave him, he had the feeling; she had a good time too.
