In the Quite of the Night

by kira

Author’s note: Thanks to Kat, who often write these two with me, for looking this over and making sure they were in character.

You’re all I want, Amber… Bernd thought as he lay alone in bed. He knew she liked girls and he had even written it down in his journal and signed it that she could have any many as she wanted, but it still hurt whenever she was out on a date. Even spending time with her twin brother James did not help. His heart wanted what it wanted and that was her. He knew he had problems and he did his best to forget about the depression that was always waiting in the shadows to rear its ugly head, but it was hard to do when she was not there. There was also so much solace he could seek from his brother. Dieter did his best and Bernd liked it when he would hold him as he cried himself out, but he also did not want to burden his younger brother with his troubles. So he just shut himself up in his room and put his iPod in the iPanda speakers he got for his birthday. Bernd lay on the bed and listened to music.

Dinner came and went mercifully without a fight from his father to come down and eat. Bernd was glad as he was in no mood for one. He felt brittle, lost, and abandoned by the object of his desire. Tears welled up in his eyes and he angrily wiped them away. Rolling onto his side and facing the wall, Bernd wrapped his arms around his pillow and stared off into space. He was beginning to regret making that promise to Amber as jealousy churned in his stomach, making him feel ill. Gripping his pillow tighter, it was several minutes, before he realized that tinkling sound he heard was something hitting the glass in his window. He got up to go see what was going on. He reached the window when another pebble hit it, startling him. Opening it, he looked out.

“Hey, Bernd!”

“Amber?” Bernd looked down at her.

“Go open the front door and let me in.” She slipped into the shadows, before he could respond.

Closing the window, Bernd quietly made his way downstairs. He hurried through the living room to the front door, opening it. “Amber.” A shy smile tugged his lips upwards.

“Bernd.” She walked in and he closed the door behind her, locking it. “Is it okay if I stay here tonight? I can go when Vati leaves in the morning for work.”

Bernd nodded. “Come,” he said, reaching out to take her hand. He could not believe she was actually here. “You okay?”

“Yeah. I had a good time with Alva, if that’s what you’re asking.” Amber smiled at him.

His flat tone made her raise an eyebrow at him, but Amber let it be. They quietly made their way upstairs to his room. When they got there, Amber said, “You okay?”

Bernd shrugged. He felt a confusing mix of emotions and it found it hard to put it all into words, not that he needed to. When it looked like he was about to burst into tears, Amber walked over to him and simply put her arms around him, holding him close. He wrapped his arms around her, and drawing emotional strength from her presence, he felt loved and wanted.

You’re all I want, Amber… he thought. And all I need…

Amber kissed his cheek. “It’s late; let’s go to sleep, okay? And can I borrow a pair of your boxers and t-shirt?” she said softly.

He pulled back and nodded. Looking a lot happier than he had before, much to her relief, Bernd moved out of her embrace and over to his dresser. He pulled out a pair of boxers and old, baggy t-shirt for her to wear to sleep, tossing them at her. Bernd also grabbed a pair for himself as well as a t-shirt. They undressed in the dark, although, he did do his best to steal a few looks at her, before they crawled into bed.

Amber held him as he snuggled with her, resting her cheek on the top of his head. While he slowly relaxed in her arms, she hoped he was not fighting with anyone like he did whenever he was upset. She sighed softly, wondering if he really meant his agreement with her or if he was just “saying” it because he felt it was the only way he could be with her. “Oh, Bernd…” she whispered in the darkness, “What am I going to do with you?” Her only answer was his quiet murmuring. She did love him, but the intensity in which he loved her often worried her in case things did not work out between them. Amber lay in the darkness, pondering her relationship with Bernd as they drifted off to sleep.
