You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me

by kira

Author’s note: Thanks to Kat, who often write these two with me, for looking this over and making sure they were in character.

“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me, you know that?” Bernd said as they lounged under a tree, the remains of a picnic lunch by their feet. Bernd’s horse Blitzkrieg grazed nearby and occasionally the big black Friesian stallion would pick his head up and whinny at them. Bernd put his arm around Amber, holding her close.

“You’re not just saying that because I’m pregnant, are you?” Amber said, her tone half serious, half teasing.

“I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t true,” he said softly. Bernd frowned. “Y-you’re not regretting it, are you?”

“Not at all.”

He smiled at her.

“You know, this is the last time I can go riding with you until the baby’s born.”

They put a hand on her belly. Amber shifted her weight, and tilting her head up, she met him halfway for a kiss. When they came up for air, Bernd murmured softly.

“I’m scared, Amber…”

“I know, Baby.”

Closing his eyes, Bernd held her close. He tried pushing his fears aside, to no avail. He could not shake the feeling he had that she would die like his mother had in the months after giving birth. He always felt guilty about the fact that he at least had memories of his mother, however vague they were, unlike his brother, and the thought of his own child going through that shook him to the core. No matter how many times Amber and his therapist assured him that what had happened to his mother was rare it just made him more anxious.

“Bernd honey, hey, Prissy? You okay?”

He nodded not that she could really see it.

“I’m okay.” He pulled back and forced himself to smile at her.

“Do I need Greta to smack some sense into you?” Amber arched her eyebrow at him. Despite her teasing tone, she was worried about him and she was not sure she could handle him freaking out on her while she was pregnant, hence their friend’s offer to straighten him out whenever he needed it.

“No.” He kissed her. “I’ll be okay.”

She nodded. “You know, every new parent gets scared, Bernd. I bet if you talked to Vati, he’d tell you that. Luigi’d tell you the same thing too. I know, why don’t you come to the doctor with me and they can explain to you everything that’s going to happen and you’ll come with every time I go too, okay?”

“Okay.” He smiled.

She laughed.

“I was just imagining you trying to explain to our grandkids, why you have pink hair and I’ve got blue.” Amber cupped his cheek and smiled.

Bernd laughed. “You think we’ll have grandkids?”

“Yeah,” she said happy his anxiety attack had passed, instead of flaring up and leaving him an emotional wreck. “And…” she said with a sigh, “as much as I love hanging out with you here, it’s your day to do the laundry and mine to get dinner started.”

“But nothing. Didi’s got an early class tonight and I need to start it soon. Once the baby’s here, Prissy,” she said, softening her admonishment with the use of his nickname, “we won’t be able to do what we want whenever we want to, so we’d better get used to it now.” Amber kissed his nose, before getting to her feet.

Bernd sighed. He knew she was right, but he still wanted to make this moment last forever. “Okay…” he whined as he stood up. Taking her arm, before she could bend and get the blanket, he pulled her close. “You really are the best thing that ever happened to me, you know that?”

“Yeah… “

“Good, cuz I don’t want you to ever forget that.” Bernd bent and picked up the blanket when she moved the picnic basket off it. He shook it out and folded it. Taking her hand, they walked over to where his horse grazed. Bernd helped her to mount and handed her the blanket. He picked up the picnic basket, and grabbing the reins, he led Blitzkrieg home.
