Title: Fit for a Queen
Author: kira
Word Count: 677
World: Capital city of Madrona
Main Characters: Antoine Fournier, Queen Margarita
Borrow: yes
Summary: Antoine makes a special treat for the Queen…
Author’s Note: Thanks to my beta Kat for reading this over for me.

Antoine Fournier was the head of the Queen’s kitchen and a former pâtissier. He had worked his way through the ranks and now he only baked when the mood hit him or for extra special occasions like Sovereignty Days, or the Queen’s birthday. Since it was the start of Sovereignty Days, he decided to take the last of the apples and make it into a pie for the Queen.

He walked into the larder and looked through the rows of provisions until he found what he was looking for; a basket of apples. He picked it up and carried it out into the kitchen, ignoring the bemused stares of the kitchen staff. After setting the basket down on the table, Antoine set to work peeling the apples. He cut them up and put them into a bowl to which he added a mixture of sugar and spices, gently tossing them to cover them. Setting that aside, Antoine made a pie crust from flour, water, butter, salt, and eggs. He also added his “secret ingredient” to keep the pie crust light and flakey. When it was ready, he rolled it out on his pastry board. Antoine carefully picked up the crust and placed it in his pie tin, leaving a bit of overhang. He then filled the lower crust with his apple mixture and some lumps of butter.

Taking the remaining dough, Antoine rolled out the upper pie crust. When it was ready, he covered the pie with it, trimming the edges, before crimping them together. Picking up his knife, Antoine cut a few slits into the top crust. He set it down, and picking up the pie, he popped it into the oven so that it could bake. While the pie was baking, Antoine made some whipped cream to top it with. After putting it in the cold larder, Antoine checked on his pie. It was browning nicely and the juices were just starting to bubble out of the slits.

While he waited for the pie to finish baking, Antoine got out a tray. On it he placed a napkin, a fork, and a plate, saucer, and teacup from the Queen’s personal china. He also got out the Queen’s favorite teapot and put the kettle on to boil. While the water was heating up, Antoine took the pie from the oven and let it cool. He also took out the box of the Queen’s favorite tea, placing some in the warmed teapot. When the water boiled, he poured it into the teapot, added it to the tray along with a cake server and the pie. Picking the tray up, Antoine left the kitchen.

Antoine walked through the palace to the Queen’s parlor. He found her reclining on a chaise-lounge near the window, reading her book. Antoine cleared his throat. “Your Majesty.”

Queen Margarita looked up. “Antoine.”

“Your tea is here, Ma’am.” Antoine walked over to the table in the middle of room and set the tray down. After setting the table for her tea, he walked over to the queen and held out his hand. “Ma’am.”

She took it as he helped her to her feet. Queen Margarita held onto his arm as he walked with her over to the table. When he pulled the chair out for her, she sat sown on it. She watched him pour tea for her and cut her a slice of pie.

“Here you go, Ma’am.”

“Thank you.” Queen Margarita tasted her slice of pie. “It’s delicious, Antoine!” She ate some more.

“You’re welcome, and thank you, Ma’am,” Antoine said. He smiled a tight little smile, although his eyes twinkled with affection for his queen. Sighing softly, he realized he would have to start looking for a successor and pass on his secret for a light, flakey crust as well as how to make the chocolate mousse cake the Queen was so fond of. He was not getting any younger, but the pleasure he got from the Queen enjoying one of his confections made it all worth it in the end.

This makes me want to bake a pie even though it's already too hot in Florida to want the oven on.

This sweet story really captures the happiness of baking something special for someone you care about and watching them enjoy it.

Life is life. I've been feeling a little guilty lately for not blogging on LJ. I spend most of my time on Tumblr these days.

A group of us over there called the Stream Team get together to watch movies together on a regular basis. Time and content vary a lot but Copperbadge pretty consistently hosts on Tuesdays at 8 Eastern if you're interested.

Nice! Thanks! Maybe once I'm done with the Doctor & Torchwood, I'll stop by. :D
