Author’s Note: Thanks to my beta Kat for reading this over for me.

“Gilbert Toussaint, I swear you love that horse more than me!” Babette Toussaint complained to her husband. “I mean really, it’s just a horse, mon petit lapin.” She sighed.

“He’s not just any horse, mon poussin,” Gilbert said. “Look at him!” He held the horse’s halter and clipped on a lead. “He’s beautiful!” Gilbert led the piebald stallion from his stall. The horse was big, standing sixteen hands tall and powerfully built, and he looked like the type of horse the Castus people preferred.

Babette sighed again. Her husband did have a point, the horse was pretty, with his black and white coloring, and the white feathering that covered his hooves. Still, with a baby on the way, the last thing they needed was another horse. “Where’s Cossette?”

“I traded her for him.” Gilbert ran a hand over the horse’s withers. “He can pull a cart, or a plough, as well as be ridden. Cossette was only good for riding, mon poussin.” He sighed softly.

Babette came up behind him and wrapped her arms around him. “But you loved her…”

“I know, but I’ve come to love him too.” He leaned into her embrace. “And those horse traders had a big family and well...” He shrugged.

“Well what?”

“They could probably get a lot more for Cossette than Pie.” He looked over his shoulder at her and smiled.

“You named the horse Pie?” Babette giggled.

“Yeah… Cuz he’s sweet as pie, Babette!” Gilbert patted Pie. “Aren’t you, boy?”

The horse whinnied as if in agreement and they laughed, their budding argument stopped, before it could start.

“So I’ve decided to be a gentleman farmer.” Gilbert took her hand and gently tugged on it. “We’ve got a bit of land and maybe we could plant some vegetables when it warms up.”

“We could, but I don’t think I can help you for much longer, mon petit lapin,” Babette sighed as she moved to face him. She placed her hand on her belly.

Gilbert cupped her cheek and leaned in to kiss her. “That’s alright, mon poussin.” He kissed her again. “Maybe I can get my brother to come live with us and help…?” He smiled.

Babette snorted in amusement. “And have all those dogs roaming all over the house? I don’t think so,” she teased.

“Oh come on, you love little Doudou!”

She rolled her eyes at him. “Yes, and I also like little Fifi and Chouchou.” She giggled. “Who would have thought your brother was so found of fluffy little dogs?”

“Yeah!” Gilbert laughed.

Mon petit lapin, you’re one to talk with your love of horses! Seriously, Gilbert, why don’t you saddle him up and go for a ride, while I go inside and write to your brother.” And get the servants to prepare the guest room… While her husband left to saddle his new horse, Babette left the stable and headed toward the manor house. She went to her husband’s study, and picking up a pen and some paper, she wrote a short letter to her brother-in-law, asking him to come for a visit and that the dogs were welcome too. When she was finished writing, she put it in an envelope to be delivered next time they went into town. Getting up from Gilbert’s writing desk, Babette walked over to the window and looked out. She saw her husband riding Pie and had to smile. Gilbert, with his shock of white hair, white shirt, black vest and boots, was just as piebald as his new horse. She laughed when he gave her a jaunty wave of the hand as he put Pie through his paces. Babette blew a kiss at him, before she left the study for the parlor, where she sat and whiled away the afternoon with her embroidery…

Re: Yay!
Those are two of my favorite breeds too! The Undertaker in Polychrome Heroics is a Friesian, and Easy City has Gypsy Vanner police horses. Over in Frankenstein's Family, the caravan that comes through the village also has Gypsy Vanners.
