Princess Carmina Infantanta’s confinement came to an end the minute the first labor pains hit her. She winced, and feeling sick to her stomach, she sat on the chamber pot. The pains came and went; sometimes close together, sometimes far apart. Her mother and sister helped her into her birthing gown, while her aunt left the room to find a servant to go get the midwife.

The closer the pains came together, the worse she felt. At one point the pains were so intense; Princess Carmina Infantanta wanted to crawl out of her skin to get away from them. She called for her mother and cried like a child. Everyone tried to get her to stop as she was exhausting herself.

When the midwife entered the room, the princess was told to lie down. As much as she didn’t want to, Princess Carmina Infantanta did as she was told. She wasn’t thrilled about the examination or the fact that her gown had been pushed up so that her lower half was exposed. That was bad enough, but when the midwife made her spread her legs and stuck her hand in the princess’ most intimate of places, Princess Carmina Infantanta thought she was going to die of embarrassment. Especially since her sister and cousin were watching with horrified fascination.

The midwife took her hand away and nodded to the queen. Turning her attention back to the princess, she said, “Your Highness, it’s time to push.”

Another contraction hit and Princess Carmina Infantanta cried out. “Push?!” she said through gritted teeth.

The midwife nodded. “Come on, push!” she said as the princess cried out.

Queen Margarita also encouraged her daughter. “Push, Baby.”

Wracked with pain, Princess Carmina Infantanta found it hard to push on command. After awhile, without her even realizing it, the princess began bearing down. Exhausted and drenched in sweat, she panted during the small lulls before the pains hit her again. Someone dabbed at the sweat on her brow; Princess Carmina Infantanta had no idea if it was her mother or her aunt. All she could focus on was the pain that ebbed and flowed in her belly. She was sure this was all God’s punishment for lying with her husband before they were married in his eyes.

“It won’t be long, Your Highness,” the midwife said. “I can see a bit of the baby’s head.” She smiled.

Princess Carmina Infantanta did not care what she saw, all she wanted at that moment was to have the baby and for the pain to stop. She was too tired to think about anything else and it was getting harder to push. She just wanted to sleep, but the pain and the fussing form all the women in the room, the midwife included, made it hard to do so. The princess was only vaguely aware of what was going on. The excitement in the room as the baby’s face slowly emerged meant nothing to her.

“Push, Your Highness!” The midwife turned the baby as she delivered the shoulders. “Come on, push!”

The princess did her best to comply. She panted, and taking a deep breath, she gave one last push. It was enough and a sharp cry pierced the room as her son was born. Princess Carmina Infantanta closed her eyes and lay back against the pillows on her bed while the midwife tied and cut the cord.

“You have a son, my dear,” Queen Margarita said. She kissed her daughter on the forehead. “He’s beautiful and has all his fingers and toes.”

“And quite a lusty cry too!” her aunt, Queen Sophia of Germania said.

Princess Carmina Infantanta nodded sleepily at her. She could hear the baby crying as they wash the birthing fluids from him. All she wanted to do was sleep, but it was not to be. While her mother held her grandson, the midwife was at her to push again. Princess Carmina Infantanta gave one last push and thankfully it was enough to expel the afterbirth. It was then that her mother handed her the baby.

She looked at him and found herself smiling. He was red-faced with a misshapen head, eyes closed, and hair still damp from his first bath. He scrunched up his face and howled at her. If was anyone else’s baby, Princess Carmina Infantanta was sure she would have thought he was ugly, but to the new mother he was beautiful. She lifted her sweat soaked birthing gown higher, exposing her breast. Ignoring the look her mother gave her, she put the baby to her breast, the way peasant women did. Sighing softly, Princess Carmina Infantanta fell in love with her baby and the idea of motherhood amid the disapproving looks and whispered comments from the others in the room…
