August Bingo 4: Brotherly Advice

Title: Brotherly Advice
Prompt: Dinner out, Relax, Familiar food, Comfort
Fandom: Original
Characters: Bernd, Dieter (Didi), mention of Valentino (Tino), Amber
Word count: 726
Rating: PG
Summary: Bernd gives his brother some dating advice that’s surprisingly good…
Author’s Note: Thanks go out to my beta Kat for looking this over for me. Also Amber, who’s briefly mentioned, belongs to her.

Dieter sighed at the row of clothes hanging neatly in his closet. He was going out with his best friend, and cousin for all intents and purposes even though they were not related in any sense of the word, Valentino, and he was nervous with ten foot high capital letters as this was going to be their first official date. The rational, thinking part of his brain told him not to worry as they had eaten out numerous times since they were babies, but the giddy, head over heels in love part, kept insisting this was a date and that it was special. Since that part tended to be louder than the rational part, Dieter felt his heart racing as he wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans.

“What am I going to wear?” he said softly. He turned around when someone knocked on his bedroom door.

“Hey, Didi!” his brother said, “Can I come in?” Without waiting for an answer, Bernd let himself in.

“Bernd.” Dieter glared at him.

“I’m going out and I don’t have time for your nonsense.”

“That’s what I’m here for, to give you some big brotherly advice.” Bernd beamed at him.

“Not now!”

“Fine! If you don’t my help…” Bernd trailed off as he folded his arms across his chest.

“Bernd, every time I take your advice, it never works out! Like the time you tried to help with the flour babies in high school and Vati thought Amber was pregnant, and the time you told me how to ace my road test and I failed, and the time you told me to-”

“Alright, alright, alright already!” Bernd cut in. He glared at his younger brother.

Dieter glared back at him. Tall and muscular, as well as normally taciturn, Dieter could be very intimidating when he wanted to be. Right now, he wanted to be as he needed to get ready for his date and he really did not want to literally toss his brother out of his room, but Bernd showed no signs of leaving. Dieter was running out of patience. “Bernd, go!”

“Fine!” his brother huffed. “But if I were you, I’d wear your light blue shirt and dark grey pants, but I’m not you…” Bernd said airily as he turned to go. “And that’s only ‘cause I heard Tino telling Amber he thought you looked hot in them.”

Bernd nodded. “And he said something about hoping you’d take him to Mario’s.”

Dieter raised an eyebrow. “He did, hunh?”

“Yeah.” Bernd smiled.

“But he always eats Italian food.” Dieter folded his arms across his chest.

“That’s ‘cause he likes it!”

“Yeah? And here I thought that was because Onkle Luigi only knows how to make Italian food,” Dieter said dryly.

“Nope! Onkle Luigi makes it ‘cause everyone loves Italian! And with the way you eat, it’s a cheap and easy Sunday meal!” Bernd smirked.

Dieter glared at his brother when it hit him. Feeling suddenly relaxed, he said, “So I should just dress like I normally do and take him out for pizza?”

“Yup!” Bernd grinned.

“And doing something that we do all the time for a first date isn’t stupid?”

“Nope, ‘cause you both’ll feel relaxed and stuff. Besides, you two had your first date, way back in kindergarten when you ate lunch together. This is like your fifty millionth or something time, but if you want to pretend it’s your first, then go with the familiar. Eat the stuff you always eat, go hang out where you always hang out afterwards. You’ll both enjoy it a lot more than if you did something stupid.”

“But shouldn’t first dates be special?”

“Nope, they can be, but they’re more fun when they’re not and that’s what makes them special. Now hurry up and get dressed, before you’re late.”

“No problem.”

Dieter watched his brother leave the room. Feeling better about his date, he did as Bernd suggested and took out his light blue chambray shirt and his faded black jeans, and got dressed. After tucking his wallet in his back pocket and grabbing his keys, Dieter headed downstairs to say goodbye to his family. He left the house, got in his car and drove off to his best friend’s house, to pick him up for the best date the two of them ever had.

You know, you're right! When I was writing this it felt natural for Bernd to offer that advice, but where it came from at the time was anyone's guess. But yeah, he does know them from way back, so it was easy for him to help out. XD Scary, knowing Bernd, but easy. Thanks! He does love Didi & Didi loves him. :D
