Hungary strode briskly through the East German streets. She was looking for one house in particular and it belonged to her friend and fellow Country, Prussia. She had some good news for him, namely that her government was disabling the physical border between Hungary and Austria. Knowing how much Prussia had fretted over his people, she figured this little bit of knowledge would help alleviate his anxiety over them as it provided a way for them to escape to the west.

Spotting him coming out of a coffee shop, she hurried over to him. “Gilbert!”

Prussia looked over in her direction. “Lizzie!” he said with a smile as he walked over to her. Wrapping his arms around her, he pulled her close in a warm embrace. Stepping back from her, he said, “What’s doing?”

“I have some somewhat good news for you.”

“Don’t tell me you’ve finally realized how awesome I am?” he teased.

“Nah…” She grinned. “I already knew that.”

They laughed.

“Do you want any coffee? This place isn’t the greatest, but at least it tastes somewhat like coffee,” Prussia said as he titled his head in the direction of the coffee shop he had just left.. “So what is this news that had you leaving home to come visit me?”

“Can we talk here?” Hungary looked around as if expecting Stasi officers to come running out of the local businesses to arrest them.

“Yea and no.” He shrugged as if to say he was sorry.

Hungary nodded. “I just wanted you to know that Roderich and I have grown apart and have broken up.”

Prussia grinned. “Awesomeness! So this means I can come and visit you?”

She nodded. “And I won’t stop you if you want to visit Roderich too.”

“Thanks! Tell Specs to get the guest room ready as I would love to come visit him.”

“I had a feeling you’d say that.”

Prussia nodded. He hugged her again. “That doesn’t mean I don’t love you anymore.”

“I know,” Hungary said as she snaked her arms around him and held him tight. “And I know you’d do the same for me,” she said softly. She was glad he understood her roundabout way of letting him know that her borders and Austria’s weren’t as guarded as they used to be. She had a feeling there would soon be an influx of East German tourists and she made a mental note to let Austria know that he would soon be invaded too. She hoped the people would have enough sense to gather outside the West German consulate, on the odd chance her government had a change of heart and decided to detain the visitors. However, if they were anything like Prussia, they would know what to do.

“So how long are you staying for?”

“Until you get tired of me or I have to go back to work, whichever comes first.”

Prussia snorted in amusement. “Sounds like a long time.”

“Let’s go buy a bottle of cheap vodka and drink to days gone by and what could be.”

“Sounds like a plan,” she said as she held onto his arm.

“Yup.” He grinned and they walked along, looking like a pair of lovers to the casual eye, which they had been since the years following the end of the war. Being in love was what had kept them sane while living under Ivan’s rule and it was the one good thing about it in Prussia’s humble opinion. She was the one constant in his life and was the one thing he hoped would never change.
