Bernd sat in his room by the window, gazing up at the stars that lit the night sky. He wished Amber was here as he felt terribly lonely and could not sleep. Amber, however, was home, no doubt sound asleep in her own bed. Bernd took a deep breath and let it out slowly. His chin resting on his upturned palm, Bernd continued his lonely vigil.
He looked down at the sound of his name, thinking he was imagining things. But no, she really was there. “Hey, Amber!”
“Can you let me in?” She looked pitiful, all hunched over as she wrapped her arms around herself in a vain attempt at keeping warm. Dressed in the sweater he got her last year for Christmas, she shivered as she had left the house without bothering to put on her winter coat.
“Yeah!” Bernd got up and hurried from his room. He stealthily made it down the hall past his father’s room and down the stairs. He ran to the kitchen, skidding to a stop in the mudroom, where he met her at the back door. Putting a finger to his lips, he opened it and let her in.
“Hey, Amber,” he said shyly.
“Hey, Prissy.” She gave him an abbreviated wave as she drank in the warmth that radiated out from the kitchen.
“Come, let’s go to my room,” he said, worried his father would wake up, see her, and take her back home.

There was no way she was going to repeat what her mother had said to her, it was too awful to even think about. Amber felt a twinge of jealousy towards her twin brother James over that, but Bernd’s arm tentatively resting on her shoulder as the other one shyly snaked around her in a hug, made her feel better. She sighed softly.
“Let me find something for you to sleep in.”
Amber watched him rummage through his dresser drawers for the over-sized t-shirt his younger brother Dieter gave him and a pair of his boxers. He was back in a minute, handing them to her. She could tell he wanted to watch her change into them, but he politely left his room to get a spare pillow from the linen closet, sensing she needed to be alone.
By the time he returned, she was dressed in her “pajamas” and ready for bed. They got into his bed, and snuggled together. As they drifted off to sleep, each one thanked their lucky stars they had each other…
