Winterfest in July Bingo 5

Title: Bernd’s “White” Christmas
Prompt: A Christmas Without Snow
Fandom: original
Characters: Bernd, Wolfgang
Word count: 465
Rating: G
Summary: Bernd is unhappy it didn’t snow on Christmas and his father does his best to give him a white Christmas…
Genre: slice of life
Author’s notes: Thanks go out to my beta, Kat, for pinking this for me.

Bernd woke up and got out of bed. He hurried over to the window and looked out, hoping against hope that the weatherman was wrong. In the pale morning light, Bernd could see there was only grass, instead of the blanket of snow he was hoping for. Not that he wanted to shovel a ton of it on his way to muck out Blitzkrieg’s stall, but still. Christmas just was not Christmas without snow. He sighed softly and got dressed.

He went downstairs, made himself a piece of bread with jam, and poured a glass of milk to wash it down with. It was not much of a breakfast, but it was not meant to be. When he was finished with the stable and had returned to go back to sleep again, his father would wake him with a proper breakfast of pancakes and sausage. Sometimes they had French toast, or fried eggs and bacon.

Bernd finished eating, and quickly cleaned up after himself, before putting on his coat and heading outside. They were having an unusual warm spell; it was supposed to hit the low sixties, so the ground was much the same as it had been in October. Bernd would not have minded the missing snow so much, if he had the soft crunch of hoarfrost beneath his feet. The layer of white made it easier to pretend there was snow on the ground too.

When he was done mucking out the stable, Bernd headed back home. He was looking forward to a shower as this time it would not be as cold, but he still would give that up in a heartbeat, if it meant a dusting of snow. Bernd opened the back door and entered the house. He hung up his coat and took off his boots, before heading into the kitchen.

Guten Morgen,” Wolfgang said. He was sitting at the kitchen table, enjoying his morning coffee.

Morgen,” Bernd said softly.

“I’m sorry, it didn’t snow.”

Bernd paused. “It’s okay, Vati. It’s too warm.” He shrugged.

“I know. Anyway, I thought you might like this.” Wolfgang pushed the can that was on the table towards Bernd.

Bernd picked it up. “Danke!” He smiled. It was a can of instant snow, where all he needed to do was add water and enjoy the fluffy whiteness.

Bitte,” his father said. “It’s not much, my boy, but it’s better than nothing.”

“No, it’s awesome, Vati! Maybe I can play with it later?”

Wolfgang nodded. He drank his coffee.

“Awesomeness!!” Bernd started to leave the kitchen.

Frohe Weihnachten, Bernd.”

Frohe Weihnachten,Vati!” Bernd said as he left the room. He looked down at the can he held in his hand and grinned. Thanks to his father, he was going to have a “white Christmas” after all.

When I wrote this I did a search on Amazon for it. I don't see the kind I originally found the first time, but this is close to what it was: https://www.amazon.com/Gaosaili-Instant-Snow-Artificial-Pack/dp/B01M18AP3R/ref=pd_sbs_201_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PVG6B4H6PFBXCDVXVPS9
