“I wish it would snow already.” Bernd shivered. “It’s cold enough to.” He stood at the bus stop with Amber, waiting for their son Fritz to get off the bus.

“I know. You’ve told me several times today,” Amber said. “And if you tell me one more time, you can dye your own hair pink.” She playfully wagged a gloved finger at him.

“Yes, ma’am!” Bernd stood ramrod straight and saluted her.

They laughed as they both knew that was an idle threat. Bernd wrapped his arms around her and held her close. “Give me some of your heat, woman!” He kissed her.

Amber chuckled. “Get your own heat!”

They were standing there, wrapped in each other’s arms when Amber noticed it. “Looks like your wish is coming true.”

“What wish?” Bernd looked at her like she had three heads.

“It’s snowing.”

A few flakes floated down. They tended to melt upon contact, but since it was the first snowfall of the season that was to be expected.

Bernd stepped back and looked around. The corners of his mouth twitched upwards in delight. “It’s snowing!”

“No shit, Sherlock.”

Bernd laughed. “This is awesome!” He held up a gloved hand to catch the sporadically falling flakes. Amber shook her head at his goofball behavior and he smirked. “Anyways, here comes the bus.”

Amber turned and saw the school bus trundling down the street. It stopped in front of them and opened its doors. Minutes later, Fritz got off the bus. “Hey, Fiete, how was school?” she said as the bus drove off.

“It was good. Eric’s Mutti came to school and read us a story. Hey, Vati?” Fritz held her hand as they walked home from the bus stop.

“What?” Bernd looked over at his son.

“Remember we saw Stevie at the store?”

“He wants to know if you’re still a fairy princess.”

“He does?” Bernd blinked. His fairy princess costume was a big hit with the kids in Fritz’s kindergarten class. Most of the kids believed Fritz’s assertion that his father was a fairy princess because of his pink hair. It also helped that whenever he did attend a school function or picked Fritz up from school his hair was that color. This time his hair had faded to its natural white blond, because they had ran out their stock of pink dye thanks to Halloween and a new manager not ordering it until Bernd had asked them several times to restock it. They were picking up some when they met one of Fritz’s classmates.

“Yes, your Vati’s still a fairy princess,” Amber said. “His hair is just white because winter’s coming.” I can’t believe I just said that… But the look on Fiete’s face is priceless… Bernd’s too…

“Yeah. What Mutti said.” Bernd grinned.

His parents nodded.

“Ummm… Vati?”

“Stevie’s big brother wants to know if you can make it snow. He wants a snow day.” Fritz looked up at his father. “What’s a snow day?”

“A snow day is like the best thing ever!” Bernd began explaining as they entered their home. “You get a day off from school cuz of all the snow.”

“Wow!” Fritz grinned like his father. “Let’s make a snow day, Vati!”

Vati can’t promise you one, Fiete,” Amber said as she hung up their coats. “I’m dyeing his hair pink.”

“Oh…” Fritz pouted.

“How about I try my best, but don’t be upset if it doesn’t happen, okay?” Bernd ruffled his son’s hair.

Fritz, mollified, nodded. “Okay.” He ran off to go look for his grandfather. “OPA!!”

Amber shook her head. “Go get changed and let’s dye your hair.”

“Yeah.” Bernd wrapped his arms around her. “Don’t worry, Amber, he’ll have forgotten about it tomorrow.”

“If you say so…”

“I do.”

The next morning they were awakened by a phone call from the school, letting them know Fritz had a snow day. Bernd and Amber raced upstairs and looked out the kitchen window. Everything was blanketed in white as it had snowed heavily during the night.

“You know, he’s going to think you did this,” Amber said.

“So? I used to think Vati was pretty awesome when I was little.” Bernd grinned.

“That’s because Vati is awesome. You not so much,” Amber teased.

Bernd rolled his eyes, and gathering his girlfriend in his arms, he kissed her long and hard. As far as he was concerned, Amber was pretty awesome too.
