“Hey, Amber, let’s go trick or treating.” Bernd grinned as he came over and sat down next to her on the sofa.
Amber eyed him suspiciously, and marking her place in her book, closed it. “Aren’t we a little too old for that?” She wanted to say “yes” in the worst way as trick-or-treating was her favorite part of celebrating Halloween, even at twenty two, but today she just was not feeling the holiday spirit. She sighed softly.
“I thought you liked trick-or-treating.” Bernd gave her a funny look.
“I do… but don’t you think we’re a little too old?”
“Come on, let’s go!” Bernd got up and turned towards her. “You can finish your scary book later! I’ll even watch that scary movie with you.”
Amber laughed. “Bernd, Corpse Bride isn’t a scary movie.”
“No, dumbass.” Amber grinned. “Anyway, since you’re so set on trick-or treating, let’s see what we can pull out of the closet and wear as a costume.”
“Works for me!!”
They came back several hours later, their pillowcases full of candy. Bernd popped the DVD into the player and they settled back on the sofa to watch, their candy in a big bowl between them. Amber moved it onto her lap and leaned on him, happy they went trick-or-treating and that he was making a huge effort to help her celebrate her favorite holiday.
“You feel better?” Bernd leaned his head on top of hers.
“Sssh… I’m watching the movie.”
“Of course I feel better, dumbass.” Amber pulled away and sat up.
Bernd, feeling her move, sat up as well. He looked over at her.
“Thanks,” Amber said.
Bernd smirked. “You’re welcome.”
Amber leaned on him again. She snorted when he put his arm around her. She reached into the candy bowl and pulled out a vanilla tootsie roll. Amber unwrapped it and popped it in Bernd’s mouth, laughing when he held her hand and licked her fingers. “Eww gross!” she teased, wiping her fingers on his shirt.
Bernd smirked at her in reply.
“Dumbass!” she said as she snaked her arm around him.
“I love you too…” he said softly, hugging her.
The candy momentarily forgotten, they held each other close as they watched Corpse Bride. Despite his initial misgivings, Bernd found he liked movie much to Amber’s delight. “So we can go trick-or-treating next year and come home and watch the movie?”
“Yup!” Amber said as she opened a mini candy bar. She ate it, finally feeling the holiday spirit.
