“Happy Birthday, Vati!”Bernd and Amber said as they handed his father a small gift wrapped box.

Wolfgang set his cup of coffee down on the kitchen table. “Danke,” he said, taking the box. He set it down on the kitchen table and opened it. Inside were an iTunes gift card and a smaller box containing an iPod Shuffle. He looked up at his son and his “adopted” daughter.

“It’s an iPod shuffle,” Amber said.

“Yeah!” Bernd said. “You put music on it; that’s what the gift card’s for. Let me get my laptop and I’ll help you set it up!’ He dashed off without waiting for a reply.

“Bernd thought you might like a little mp3 player to put your favorite music on.” Amber smiled as she sat down next to him at the kitchen table. “And if they don’t have anything you like, I’m sure Bernd can find it somewhere online.”

Wolfgang nodded. If it was online, Bernd would find it. Besides, as much as he loved his old stereo and Walkman, this thing was smaller and did not need batteries or a power source other than its built-in rechargeable battery. He took out the instruction booklet and gave it a quick read while Amber got up and made herself a cup of tea. He was just putting it back into the tiny case when his son returned.

“Alrighty,” Bernd said as he opened his laptop and turned it on. “Let’s get you all set up.”

“Don’t you need to set it up on the computer in my study?” Wolfgang raised his eyebrow at his son.

Bernd blinked. “Oh yeah…” He blushed. Closing his laptop, he stood up and headed towards his father’s study.

Wolfgang shook his head, an amused smile tugging his lips upwards. He looked at Amber and said, “I think he’s more excited about this thing than I am.”

She chuckled. “Just be glad I talked him out of getting you a pink one.” She grinned. “Seriously, I think once you get some songs loaded onto it and play around with it, you like it. He got me one too. It’s nice to listen to while reading.” Her grin grew wicked. “You could use it to pretend to ignore him too when he gets to be a bit much. You know, ‘sorry, Bernd, I couldn’t hear you.’ Just something you might want to keep in mind.”

Wolfgang laughed. “I’ll try to remember that.”

Amber nodded. “Thought you’d like that.”

They reached Wolfgang’s study minutes after Bernd. Neither one was surprised that he had already installed the iTunes setup. He was about to set up the iTunes gift card, when he noticed they were there. “Vati, I need your iPod so I can charge it for you.” Bernd tapped away at the keyboard, setting up his father’s iTunes account. When he was finished, he took the iPod from his father and the cord from the case and plugged it into the computer. While it was charging, Bernd had Wolfgang sit down at the computer.

“This is iTunes, and you just browse here to find what kind of music you like…” Bernd explained as he pointed to things on the monitor.

Wolfgang nodded and clicked where told. He looked around the site, before settling on the pop/ adult contemporary category and browsing it. He sampled a few songs, shaking his head “no” whenever Bernd asked if he wanted to buy it. Then he found it, a song he had heard in a café while traveling with his late wife. “I want this one,” he said, pointing to “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison. “Your Mutti liked it.”

“Yeah?” Bernd paused, taken aback by the mention of his late mother. He frowned, his excitement momentarily forgotten. “Ummm… So ummm, just click on it. You just do that with anything else you like until you use up the gift card, okay?”

“And if you need any help, just give a yell. Amber and I are gonna watch TV in the den.”

Wolfgang nodded. He could hear the song in his head as he perused iTunes. He remembered finding it in a record shop during that trip and buying the 45. He and Angela played it a lot, despite its eventual skips, pops, and crackles. It was one of the records he had brought over from Germany when he immigrated to America after her passing. Unfortunately, it did not survive the move and Wolfgang had contented himself with listening to it on the radio.

Later that night, he lay in bed, listening to his iPod shuffle, before he went to sleep. When “Brown Eyed Girl” came on he smiled. For the first time in a very long time, he could feel his late wife’s presence beside him, only this time it did not make him feel sad or lonely.

“So hard to find my way… Now that I'm all on my own… I saw you just the other day… My how you have grown…” Van Morrison sang. “Cast my memory back there, Lord… Sometime I'm overcome thinking 'bout… Making love in the green grass… Behind the stadium with you… My brown eyed girl… You're my brown eyed girl…”

Wolfgang listened until the song finished, before switching his iPod off. He set it on the bedside table, next to the picture of his late wife. He turned off the light, and closing his eyes, he relived his memories of Angela and the good times they had had as he drifted off to sleep.
