Title: Halloween Costumes
Prompt: Canary
Fandom: Original
Characters: Amber, Bernd, and James
Word count: 1078
Rating: G
Summary: Bernd, Amber, and James scour the local thrift store in search of something they could turn into Halloween costumes…
Author’s note: Thanks to my beta Kat for pinking this. Please note that Amber and James belong to her.

“Awesomeness!!” Bernd said as he grabbed the bright yellow hoodie off the rack. “Look Amber, I’m a canary!!” Grinning, he pulled it over his head. It was two sizes too big for his slender frame, but Bernd did not care. He flapped his “wings” at his best friend.

Amber laughed. “A few felt feathers and a beak and you’re all set. Now, all we need to do is find something for me.” She was tired of wandering up and down the aisles in the thrift store as she looked for something to turn into a Halloween costume. Nothing had been particularly inspiring. She had even resorted to looking through the mountains of old bridesmaid dresses, but she was not really a princess type, despite finding a few that would fit over her ample bosom. The one slinky black dress she found that would have been perfect for a vampire was too small.

Bernd, sensing her mood, said, “You wanna be the canary, instead? I can always be a princess…” He gazed over at the rack of bridesmaid dresses.

“Ummm…” She hadn't really wanted to be a canary. Birds were more Bernd's thing. However, she remembered seeing something else that might work. “Wait! Let’s go look over at the ‘athletic wear’ again.”

“Okay.” Bernd pulled the hoodie off over his head and trailed after her. He stood there, watching Amber enthusiastically go through the rack of sweatshirts and pants.

“Here,” she said, tossing a pair of yellow sweat pants at him. “I’ve got a pair of orange striped socks you can wear too…” She was thinking out loud, muttering softly to herself as she searched the rack, when she found it. Amber grabbed the faded pink track suit. It looked like vintage eighties wear; pink with big grey and black splotches all over it. Even better, it was big enough to fit. “What do you think?” Amber held it up against herself.

“Pink?” Bernd looked at her like she suddenly sprouted six heads. Amber had some sort of vendetta against the color for as long as he could remember.

Amber rolled her eyes at him. “Remember what I got last year on clearance?”

Bernd frowned and shook his head.

“I got that cute little nose, ears, and tail?” She snorted at him, giving him a hint.

“A piggy!!”

“Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner!” Amber grinned at him. “But not just any old pig, I’m going to be…” She grabbed a misplaced turquoise throw and wrapped it dramatically around herself. “A pig in a blanket.”

Bernd laughed. “Awesomeness!!”

“Thank you!” Amber grinned in triumph.

Her twin brother James walked up to them. “Hey, guys!”

“Numbnuts,” Amber acknowledged his presence, calling him by her pet name for him.

James rolled his eyes at her.

“Hey, James!! You find your costume yet? I’m gonna be a canary and Amber’s gonna be a pig in a blanket!”

“Cool!” James' face dropped. “And no.” He shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot. At six foot two, there was a good chance that anything he picked would be too short.

“Need help? Maybe me and Amber can find something for you!”

“Yeah?” James tilted his head curiously at Bernd's enthusiasm.

“Yeah,” Amber said. “Maybe this year, you can be the pretty pink princess, instead of Bernd.” She smirked at him.

“Maybe I will,” James said, sticking his tongue out at her.

“Awesomeness!! Let’s go, James!” Bernd grabbed his best friend’s arm. “We’ll be back in a few, Amber!”

“Have fun, you two!” Amber waved them off. She walked over to an old sofa and sat down to wait.

Bernd wandered the aisles with James in tow. They would stop every so often to look at stuff. Occasionally, Bernd would pull something off the rack and hold it up to his friend. James in turn would shake his head.

“I’ll know it when I see it, Bernd,” James said. They were taking another loop around the racks of men’s shirts. “Got it!!” James grinned as he reached for the lone Hawaiian shirt in a sea of team t-shirts and band ones.

“Nice!! So what’re ya gonna be?” Bernd said.

“Remember that movie I watched the other day?”

“The one about the stoners in Vegas?”

James snorted. “Yeah, so I think I’ll go as Raoul Duke. Now, all I need is a white bucket hat…” James trailed off and went in search of “accessories.” One the way, he grabbed a pair of faded beige shorts. Finding the accessories section, he lucked out and managed to not only get the hat he wanted, but a pair of aviator sunglasses. “Finished and done! Let’s go find Amber and pay for this stuff.”

“Okay!” Bernd said.

Finding Amber where they left her, the three of them walked over to the register and paid for their purchases.

On the way home, Amber insisted they stop at the craft store. They went inside and wandered around until they found the felt squares.

“Let me see your hoodie,” Amber said. She pulled out several pieces of yellow felt.

Bernd opened his bag and pulled a sleeve out. Amber held the felt up to it. She shook her head and reached for the yellow-orange squares. She put one next to the sleeve. “What do you think?”

“I like that better than the yellow ones.”

“What about some orange?” James said. He was getting bored and wanted to leave, despite only being there for five minutes. He really wanted to go home and try on his costume, but he wisely kept that bit of information to himself.

Amber picked up a square from the display rack. She held it up to the hoodie. “Good choice, Numbnuts. You like it, Bernd?”

“Yeah! Unless you think real feathers would work better. They have a bag with a whole bunch of different colors in it.”

Amber shook her head. She grabbed a bunch of squares in orange and yellow-orange. “This’ll work better. We’ll just cut out some feather shapes and sew them to the hoodie’s sleeves and a few for a tail and if I have anything left over, we’ll make some feathers for your head.” She grabbed an extra square of orange felt. “To make you a beak.”

A few dollars later, they left the store. Amber and Bernd headed back to his house to work on their costumes, while James went home. They agreed to meet back after dinner to go trick or treating.

I'm glad they were all able to find something. James tends to be hard to dress.
