Author’s Note: Special thanks to Kat for pinking this for me. Also please note Amber belongs to Kat, I’m just borrowing her.

“Keep your eyes closed and come with me,” Amber said as she took Bernd by the hand. They shut the car door, and despite feeling sill about it, Bernd kept his eyes shut. They made their way downtown through the crowds of people that were holiday shopping.

“Are we there yet?” Bernd asked. It was getting hard to keep his eyes closed because he was jostled as they made their way to the spot Amber was leading him to.

Bernd inhaled deeply. He was about to heave a long suffering sigh, but there was something familiar in the air that seemed out of place downtown. “Amber?”

“Keep your eyes closed!” She pulled him along, inching their way closer to her surprise.

“Okay, okay!” He grinned. If he was not mistaken, there was a definite horsey tang to the cold air. Bernd struggled to keep his eyes closed. “Now?”

“Now.” Amber grinned. They were standing in front of the Budweiser Clydesdales.

Bernd opened his eyes. “I knew it!!” He was grinning ear to ear. “Hey, boy…” he said softly as he reached out to touch one of the lead horses. He laughed when the horse blew his warm breath on his palm. “Sorry, I didn’t bring any horsey treats.” He rubbed the horse’s velvety soft nose. “Blame it on her,” he tilted his head towards Amber, “and her secrets. But you are a nice surprise. All of you…” He looked at Amber. “Thanks!”

“I knew you’d like it. And uh, hurry up. I don’t think you’re supposed to be petting them.” Amber looked around nervously.

Bernd sighed. “Yeah… Anyway, you guys awesome,” he said to the horses. “Thanks for visiting here in the middle of nowhere.” Spotting the guy, who was supposed to be watching the team of Clydesdales, coming over to them, he said, “Thanks. They’re really beautiful.”

“Thanks. You know you’re not supposed to be bothering them.” The guy grabbed the bridle of the lead horse closest to Bernd. He rubbed the horse’s nose.

Bernd nodded. “Sorry, but I can’t help it. I have a horse at home and…” Bernd shrugged.

The guy nodded. “Anyway, next time you’re in St. Louis, you should stop by the stables and come see them.”

“Yeah!” Bernd grinned. “Can I get a pic with them? You too?” He fished his cell phone out of his back pocket.

“Sure, but make it quick.” The guy stood there, still holding the horse’s bridle, while Bernd handed the phone to Amber and got into position.

Amber took their picture.

“Thanks,” Bernd said.

“No problem. You really should try to make to St. Louis. You can get a picture with them there.”

“Awesomeness!!” Bernd said as Amber dragged him over to the line for the free beer tasting.

“I’m sorry, Bernd, but I don’t think we’ll make to St. Louis for a while, if ever.”

“I know, but a boy can dream, right?” he said as they got in line. Bernd smiled softly.

“Yeah.” Amber returned his smile a little sadly. He knew she would have gotten him there if she could, even if it did not seem feasible.

They got their beers and as they headed away to drink them, Bernd paused. Amber gave him a funny look. He simply raised his plastic cup and said, “To best friends and girlfriends, Clydesdales, and free beer!”

“Oh yeah!” Amber raised hers. She rolled her eyes at the “girlfriend” comment, but let it pass.

They drank and wandered around downtown, taking in the sights.
