Happy Bday, Kat, with love…
James reluctantly pushed Ashes aside, and hauled his achy body off the sofa to go answer the door. He groaned and rubbed under his nose, sniffing as he did so. Fuck this cold!! He thought miserably. James rarely, if ever, got sick and when he did, it was generally nothing more than some sniffles or a mild sore throat. This… this was the cold from hell. He had called in sick for the past three days, something he never did. James figured he must look like hell, if Cesare was upset enough to threaten to call in sick as well so he can pour the chicken soup Julio had brought home down James’ throat. That combined with complaints about being tired of cleaning the litter box, which James knew was Cesare’s way of worrying about him, made him wonder if he should go see the doctor.
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” he croaked as he shuffled over to the door. Ashes got there first and meowed loudly when whoever was out there, rang the doorbell again. James growled and opened the door. “Bernd?” he stepped aside to let him in.
“Hey, James! I heard you were sick so I brought some of Vati’s cocoa and some cookies Didi made. Amber says, and I quote, ‘Quit faking it, Numbnuts!’” Bernd smirked.
James chuckled, although it sounded more like a cough than anything else. “How’d you know I was sick?” He closed the door and they slowly made their way to the living room, Ashes trailing behind like a little dog. James lay down on the sofa and Ashes jumped up on his chest. The little cat lay down as well, her paws tucked in, and eyes closed, she began to purr.
“A little birdie told me,” Bernd laughed. “Seriously, Cesare called Tino, who told Didi, who called me when he couldn’t reach Amber. I think he would have called Greta too, if he had her number. Anyways… he called me to tell me you were dying and needed someone to go look after you, so I came.” He grinned. “By the way, Amber says she’s sorry, she couldn’t come, but she’s got another final this afternoon.”
James groaned. “Fuck! I missed my math final the other day. I need to get my laptop and email my prof.”
“Want me to go get it?” Bernd got up to go get a mug for the cocoa.
“Please? It’s in the kitchen on the table, charging.”
“Sure.” Bernd headed into the kitchen. He came back with two mugs and a plate of cookies, using a cookie sheet that he used as a tray. He set the tray down on the coffee table and handed a mug to James. “Your laptop’s still charging.”
“Thanks.” James sipped the cocoa. “Yeah?”
Bernd nodded and sipped his cocoa. “I have my German final on Thursday and my Art History on Friday. Amber said she’d study with me.”
“They said on the news it’s supposed to snow Thursday into Friday,” James said. The cocoa soothed his sore throat and warmed his chest. Knowing his friends and boyfriend cared about him also made him feel better.
“You wanna watch TV?” Bernd reached for the remote.
“Okay.” James made himself comfortable on the sofa. He shook his head when Bernd came over and picked up his feet, sat back, and put them on his lap. James laughed when Bernd smirked at him, before settling back to watch TV. It was not long before he drifted off to sleep. Bernd, careful to avoid waking him, moved James’ feet and stood up when he heard someone enter the apartment.
“Hey, Cesare.” He walked over to greet him.
“Oh, hey, Bernd.” Cesare hung up his coat.
“He’s sleeping,” Bernd said, answering Cesare’s unspoken question. “I’d better get going.” He reached for his coat.
“Yeah.” Cesare looked away and back. “And ummm… thanks.”
“No problem. See ya!” Bernd put on his coat.
“Bye.” Cesare saw him out. He walked into the living room and saw that James was fast asleep. With Ashes curled up on his chest, purring. Cesare rubbed the cat’s cheek with the back of his finger and cleaned up. He took the empty mugs and the plate of cookies to the kitchen, where he found the thermos of cocoa. Cesare set the mugs in the sink and cookies on the counter. He walked over to the thermos and opened it. A faint smile tugged at his lips when he noticed a little bit left. Grabbing a clean mug, Cesare poured the cocoa into it and drank. He hoped it made James feel as good as he did when he swallowed. He set the mug down when he was finished and coughed. Damn it! You’d better have not made me sick too!
