This year, the town officials decided to try a Christmas market and carnival. It was set up in the community center as a precaution against a sudden snow storm. The place was full of people browsing the various tables littered with handmade items. There were also several food vendors offering typical carnival food. At one end, there was a large bouncy castle for the kids, pony rides, and a small petting zoo consisting of a couple of goats, some weird looking chickens that look more like living feather dusters than birds, several child high pens with rabbits and guinea pigs, and a reindeer. In the middle of it all, was Santa and his elves.
Bernd and James pushed the stroller through the crowds of people. Little Fritz sat there, cooing at the people in the stalls and generally being cute like only babies can, while his father and uncle shopped. He was just as adorable when they took him in the petting zoo, squealing with delight when he saw the reindeer. Bernd was convinced he thought the deer was his father’s horse. Although, James was sure it was because of Fritz loved the little deer plushie he got him. Both adults were in agreement on one thing; Fritz was the cutest baby there.
When they finished shopping, they took Fritz to see Santa. Fritz cooed at the elves and the moms that waited on line with their children, so much so, that Bernd was sure they were going to get an awesome picture when their turn came. The moment finally arrived and instead of sitting there, cooing at Santa, Fritz burst into tears. Bernd had to come get him. Picking up the crying infant, Fritz settled down in Bernd’s arms. He tried again to get Fritz to sit with Santa, but the baby was having none of it. James even tried to get Fritz to sit there quietly to no avail. Determined to get a picture out of it, Bernd finally sat next to Santa. James flanked the jolly old elf on the other side, with Fritz in the middle. Happy they were there; Fritz giggled and cooed, while the adults rattled off a list of things to get him to Santa. Santa found it funny that the baby wanted a couple of video games, but he wisely kept that to himself. The picture was taken and all the elves thought Fritz looked cute.
They left the community center and headed home. While Bernd brought in Fritz and took him to the nursery for a nap, James brought in all the gifts Bernd had brought for everyone. The picture with Santa was given to Wolfgang, who proudly displayed it on the fireplace mantle, moving the decorations around so that it had “center stage.” Everyone agreed it was, to quote Bernd, “An awesome pic.”
