Happy Bday, Kat, with love…
Bernd groaned when he opened the backdoor and saw all the snow. It was a lot worse than when he went out earlier to muck out Blitzkrieg’s stall and take care of the animals. Big, fat, flakes fell from the sky, blanketing everything in white. It would take hours to shovel a path to his car and down the driveway; time he felt would be better spent playing video games with James. He closed the door and sighed.
Feeling neglected by his friends and lovers, he left the mudroom and went back into the kitchen. Bernd went through the motions of making cocoa. He grumbled softly under his breath when the milk, he was heating up, nearly overflowed the pot when it boiled. Turning down the flame, he added the cocoa powder, sugar and a pinch of salt. He whisked the mixture together and when it was done, poured it into a mug. Bernd put the pot in the sink, before taking his mug over to the table and sitting down.
Bernd stared at the phone, hoping James would call. When he did not, he focused his attention on the window and falling snow. Wallowing in self-pity, he never noticed his father entering the kitchen.
“Bernd?” Wolfgang gave him a concerned look.
“Hunh?” Bernd blinked and looked over at him. “Vati?”
“Are you okay?” Wolfgang sat down at the table across from his son.
Bernd nodded. He drank his cocoa and flashed a weak smile at his father. The last thing he wanted was to get into an argument about how he should be feeling.
“Are you sure?”
Bernd shrugged. “Amber’s busy with Greta all the time and I wanted to hang out with James and Cesare, and…” he trailed off and shrugged again.
Wolfgang reached across the table to pat his son’s hand. “When I was a little bit older than you and married to your Mutti, we met your Onkel Luigi and his wife and well… we, ummm,” Wolfgang frowned. “We became… how do you say ummm… a family. And there were times when I felt left out and so did Luigi and your Mutti and…”
Bernd gave his father a look like he did not believe a word he said. “Okay.” There was no way his father, who was the picture of uptightness, was ever in a polyamorous relationship, rumors of his father and Onkel Luigi being a couple notwithstanding.
“I know you don’t believe me, Bernd, but it’s true.” Wolfgang sighed.
“Okay…” Bernd sighed softly. Now, he not only felt lonely and neglected by his friends and lovers, he was weirded out by his father’s little “revelation.” Luckily, before his father could say anything else, the phone rang. “I’ll get it!” he got up to answer the phone. “Hey there,” he said.
“Yeah! I’m glad I caught you at home.”
“Yeah! It’s really coming down and I was worried you got stuck somewhere on your way over. Cesare was worried too.”
Bernd could hear Cesare’s muffled voice in the background, yelling. He smiled. “I was going to call you, but I was in the kitchen with Vati and umm…” He nodded at his father and watched him leave the room.
“You want to play Panzers and Shermans? We can FaceTime each other.”
“Sounds like fun! See you in a bit!”
Bernd hung up. Feeling better, he raced upstairs to his room. Opening his laptop, he started the video game and got James on FaceTime. While not as much fun as playing video games in person, it was a lot more fun than moping around because of the snow.
