“Awe…” Ruth said when she spotted the little ball of black fluff under the wood pile. “Here, kitty, kitty!” she said as she approached the kitten. It mewed softly at her, scooting backwards when she bent to pick it up. “I’m not going to hurt you, little one, I promise.” Ruth slowly reached out as she made soft little noises to the kitten. Much to her surprise, she was able to get it without getting scratched up in the process. “Poor little baby, I think you’ll like it at my house. There’s lots of other little kitties for you to play with.”

Ruth held the kitten close, the wood she was intending to bring in forgotten for the moment. She entered her home, nudging the door closed with her hip as she was greeted by several of the cats that lived there. “Alex!” she called out. “Look what I found!”

“I’d better not be another cat!” Alex grumbled as she poked the fire in the fireplace. She rose to her feet, the knee - she had injured during Vine Fest - aching as badly as it had when she had first hurt it. She limped into the kitchen to find her partner cuddling a kitten. “Ruth.” She heaved a long suffering sigh. “I thought we agreed, no more cats.” Alex folded her arms across her chest.

“It’s not a cat; it’s a kitten.” Ruth smiled. “Look at how cute she is. I mean how can you resist that face?” She held out the kitten, which meowed piteously.

Alex’s expression softened. “She is cute, I’ll give you that, but we already have a dozen cats of all shapes, sizes, and colors. We have enough trouble, taking care of what we got.” Alex stroked the kitten’s cheek with her finger.

“So? She’ll be lucky thirteen.” Ruth smiled. “Hey, that’s not a bad name for her… What do you think of the name Lucky?” She handed her partner the kitten

“Ruth…” Alex scowled. She shook her head when the kitten started purring. “Okay, okay… I give up. She can stay until we can find someone to take her.”

“Yay!” Ruth kissed Alex’s cheek. “I knew you’d fall in love with her!” She playfully smirked.

Alex shook her head and sighed. “I didn’t say anything about falling in love with anyone.”

Ruth giggled and put on an apron. “You didn’t have to!”

Alex opened her mouth as if to say something and then quickly shut it. She looked at the kitten and thought for a minute. “So what are we having for dinner?” Alex cuddled it as she watched her partner putter around the kitchen.

“Fish stew. Peter had some oysters he was able to sell at market along with those little lobsters and some fish, so I thought why not make a stew?” Ruth smiled. “I started it this morning when I came home from the marketplace; it should be ready to eat by now.”

“Oh good.” Alex walked over to the table and sat down with the kitten. “Thanks,” she said when Ruth placed a bowl of stew in front of her. She waited for her partner to sit down before eating. “Hey! That’s mine,” she said to the kitten, who was trying to eat her stew. “Get your own.” Alex batted the kitten’s paw away.

Ruth chuckled softly to herself. Judging by the way her partner was behaving with the kitten, the little darling was here to stay. I guess Lucky was the perfect name for you after all…
