Dean and his little brother Sammy were having the time of their lives trick or treating with their Uncle Bobby. Dean thought his little brother looked adorable dressed like a pumpkin, and if anyone had asked Sammy, he would have told them his big brother looked really cool in his jeans and leather jacket. Both boys agreed that Uncle Bobby was the coolest uncle ever with the way he hung back on the sidewalk while they went up to the door to ring the bell.

The people here were much nicer too. They did not yell at them like the people did in whatever motel they happened to stay at on Halloween. No, they oohed and aahed over their costumes and gave them more candy than the boys could remember ever seeing outside a gas station convenience store. It was not long before their pillow cases were bursting with Halloween treats, but there was still one house left to visit. Whoever lived there seemed to really like Halloween.

The boys hurried up the walk to the front door, while Bobby waited on the sidewalk. An older woman answered the door and instead of candy, she dropped a couple of pennies into the pillowcases the boys were using to carry their Halloween haul. Dean thought it was lame, but Sammy thought it was awesome. The six year old was convinced they were magic and that if wished hard enough, all his wishes would come true.

While they waited for Uncle Bobby to go through their candy, Sammy sat off to the side with his pennies. He also had the ones that Dean had given him in exchange for a pack of gum. Sammy held the pennies tightly in his hand. Closing his eyes, Sammy silently wished his dad would come home. He opened them at the sound of Dean’s excited voice.

The six year old got up and ran over to him. “Daddy!! I got wishing pennies!”

John picked him up. “You do?”

Dean rolled his eyes. “Those are just regular pennies, Sammy.”

“They are not! I wished Daddy’d come home and he did!” Sammy pouted.

John shook his head at his eldest. Getting his youngest’s attention, he said, “Maybe they only have one wish in them, right, Bobby?”

Bobby nodded. ‘Your daddy’s right, Sammy. Magic pennies are one wish only and then they turn into regular pennies.” He hoped that John’s arrival was just a coincidence as he was sure any wishes Sammy made would come at a steep price. He finished checking the boys’ candy, before going over to one of the bookcases in the living room. He wanted to do some research on “wishing items” and was glad the boys were distracted by their father’s arrival.

A couple of quick phone calls later to some fellow hunters, and Bobby came to the conclusion that Dean was right; they were nothing more than a handful of regular pennies. Sighing with relief, he let John know that as the boys headed up to their room.

“Good. I hate to think what Sammy could have stirred up in all innocence,” John said, before also heading upstairs to tuck them in.

“Night, Dad,” Dean said. He was reading a comic book, using a flashlight to illuminate the pages. “I promise not to stay up late or keep Sammy up.”

John nodded. “Good night, Dean.” He sat on Sammy’s bed. “Good night, Sammy.”

“Good night, Daddy, and tell Uncle Bobby, I said good night.” Sammy gave him a hug.

“Will do” John tucked him in and ruffled his hair. He got up and turned out the lights as he left the room. “Sleep well.”

Sammy rolled over and snuggled under the blankets. He clutched the pennies in his hand. He did not care what anyone said; as far as the six year old was concerned they were magic wishing pennies. Closing his eyes, he drifted off to sleep, dreaming about all the things he would wish for.

Thank you for such a sweet and thoughtful fic. Of course, Sammy would think he had his wish granted. *huggles*
